Tips on buying a lawn Scarifier

Powermec_st45h_lawn_scarifier_2We all want to have a great lawn and choosing the right mower for the right application is one of the major considerations of getting the process right.

However, the grass cutting, whilst extremely important to get right, is not the only operation that has to be carried out in the quest for the right results.

Often overlooked is the essential operation of scarifying. A brief definition of scarifying is the removal of lateral grass growth and dead grass (thatch) which builds up leading to a distressed sward and deteriorating lawn.

A scarifier utilises a rotating cylinder cassette with knife tines that cut into the surface of the soil (or sometimes just brushing). It tears through all of the waste that builds up allowing air and light to get through.

The grass, which will be in a distressed state because it has to grow through this thatch layer, will now be invigorated and coupled with a regime of feeding and aeration will start to recover and strengthen.

The tines, when allowed to pierce the soil, will also 'prune' the shallow roots which in turn causes 'tillering' and the grass roots will thicken.

Scarifying is an essential complimentary maintenance procedure for any lawn.
